JW Wilson Salesman Sample Buggy Seat sugar bowl 13" W x 5" D1890s 1910s; JW Wilson's Swing Seat, Manchester, NH. In the late 1800s, drivers of wagons and heavy carriages known as "drays" had a problem, and this wooden salesman sample seat provided a solution. John W. Wilson explains his invention in his patent for 'Swing Seat for Drays' on April 7, 1898, starting at line 12, "Drivers of heavy trucks and wagon experience much annoyance and often suffer injury from the severe shock encountered in driving over
